Forced Piracy?
So I recently bought (yes, BOUGHT, you cheapskates!) myself a game called Grand Theft Auto 4, more commonly known as GTA IV. And I must confess that the game made me turn to piracy to actually play the game, not kidding.
Here is how it goes:
If you paid for the game:
- Install the game
- Login or Create Account at Rockstar Games’ SocialClub, because apparently without that, you can’t access multiplayer content.
- Once you enter the game, the game promptly reminds you that you need to login with your Windows LIVE account to save the game and get access to bonuses. Yes, not the SocialClub where you registered earlier on, but Windows LIVE.
- If its the first time you used your Hotmail/LIVE ID for a game, GTA IV will return an error saying that you need to make a GamerTag, for which a browser window will open up and the game minimised, or quit, if your PC is particularly unstable.
- The website will load up in INTERNET EXPLORER!!! Now, I might be the only one out there that uses Firefox, Opera or Google Chrome to get the job done, but I don’t think so. For some reason Microsoft decides to ignore that you’ve set a default browser (which is NOT IE 99% of the time) whenever it starts one of its own ‘in-house’ services. Anyway, for me, this was the first run of IE after it upgraded itself, so I had to fill out an annoying preferences dialog box. (At this point, IE refused to believe that I was connected to the internet, and gave me the Work Offline page, but I accept that as my mistake - even though I had 2 other browsers running perfectly fine at the time).
- ^ Wall of Text hit for over 9000 damage! Its Super Effective!
- Since I don’t own an XBOX, I didn’t have an XBOX LIVE GamerTag, and didn’t know that they are auto generated for you, and needless to say, mine is pretty lame [TsunamicMammal5].
- After finally entering that in the game, the game goes “Sign-In change detected, Restarting”, effectively nullifying the last 30 minutes of progress I made in the game, but hey, I can SAVE GAMES now, I even have a GamerTag, which is really useful since I don’t usually have anything to do with XBOX LIVE, and Internet Explorer seems to have made itself my default browser (again, its entirely my fault, I was too busy cussing at the damn game that I didn’t read the preferences dialog box properly).
If you pirated the game:
- Install the game
- Use the crack, then the keygen when prompted for a serial key in-game.
- Make an offline account.
- [Optional] Download bonus content separately from another torrent.
- Play
I have read on some forums that some well known crackers (don’t know what else to call them) are busy coming up with a crack which enables some sort of LAN multiplayer, and allows connections to private servers for online gameplay.
So, I basically get penalised for buying a game, and get to retain my peace of mind if I pirate the game...
HMMM its an INCREDIBLY difficult dilemma I face! Pay to get harassed, or pirate to enjoy the game? I can’t make my mind up!
hahahahaha! TsunamicMammal ... !
